Meeting of the European Telecommunications Council: the digital dividend |

The European Telecommunications Council at its meeting on 18 December emphasized the fact that the radio frequency spectrum is a scarce resource that needs to be used efficiently and the importance of using the digital dividend as an opportunity to supply the rural areas of broadband services and high speed.
On 18 December the European Telecommunications Councile met in Budapest to address, among other issues, the strategy after the current i2010, the digital dividend and the need for a European collaborative approach to network security and information.
Regarding to post-i2010 strategy, it decided to address this new agenda in the spring of 2010, under the Spanish presidency of the EU. This agenda will contain key points such as the importance of maintaining the open, decentralized and dynamic Internet and universal access to it as a means of strengthening a knowledge-based society, and development of electronic means of identification to ensure data protection and respect for citizens' privacy.
It also invited member states to contribute to the development of a European common policy with regard to coordination of the radio spectrum with other countries.
